Thin Lizzy & Supersuckers – Music Hall – 06/01/11
Thin Lizzy are a band I’ve always been well aware of but had never seen live before and almost twenty-five years since their main man Phil Lynott joined the great Supergroup in the sky I took the chance to see them while I still could. Two founder members remain, drummer Brian Downey and guitarist Scott Gorham. I was already familiar with vocalist Ricky Warwick from The Almighty and no stranger to Aberdeen and often a guest with one of my favourite bands from Belfast, Stiff Little Fingers.
Anyway, to a packed Music Hall we have a support all the way from Seattle USA, the best rock n roll band in the world, (at least that’s what they told us almost between every song), yes, it’s the Supersuckers…. and yeah, standard rock from what I could tell with some nice guitar bits here and there but not really my cup of tea I must admit. Having said that they’d been transported in from another continent so someone obviously rates them enough to give them this tour support. Not me though, and driving home afterwards I’m not sure I could remember any of their songs.
I was pleased when Thin Lizzy finally take to the stage and kicking off an amazing light show with some superbly matched images going on the stage when live footage of the night wasn’t being shown. On the night its the heavyweight anthems that get the best reaction from the hesitant Aberdeen crowd, playing Jailbreak early on and Whiskey in the Jar and Bad Reputation halfway through while The Boys Are Back in Town closes the main set. Highlight for me was a f**king stunning Still in Love With You which I thought was just made for the watching down Lynott.
The encore is Rosalie followed by Black Rose. A great way to end the show. What did I think, well I feel that there was just `something missing` if that makes any sense at all. The musicians playing was as good as you would hope it to be and Warwick does give it a good bash, but I suppose, some legends just ain’t gonne be replaced that easily are they? Still Burning.
