Star*Rats, Velvet Star & Crooked Little Vein – Moorings Bar – 09/01/11
A few weeks ago I’d decided that I should frequent the Moorings Bar a bit more than I do, after all they have bands on every Saturday night and now also a band on a Friday night as well. Anyway, a wee scan of the gigs to come and I easily make this as a `must attend` after reading the comparison of Star*Rats to Swedish rock blokes Hardcore Superstar.
My pleas for a review of the night have come to nothing so I apologise if this is all a bit vague, in fact, if you were there and can do better (not difficult!) just get in touch.
First up are local punky band Crooked Little Vein. A five piece with a stand in bass player on the night and for the record were much better than I’d hoped for. Not perfect, but an absolutely great start to the evening with singer Amy Ann Cross sounding as good as she looked.
I’m a bit disappointed that I didn’t pay attention to any song titles but as I said I didn’t really expect to do a review so that’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it. One song I already knew though was `Bodies` and what a grand idea it was to throw it in midway through the Velvet Star set. I love a singalong song when it’s timed just right and tonight it was with various audience members getting a shot of the mic when it came to the chorus lines. Not that their own songs were any lesser quality, the link is below and for my part I hope these guys can return to ABZ soon. They’re punky, rocky and best of all FUN.
Danish band Star*Rats ended their tour with their first visit to Aberdeen but despite the low numbers in the bar it looked like they’d enjoyed every minute and played as though there were 500 people there. No signs of tiredness it was almost like a mini-celebration on the stage at times. Not so hard as Backyard Babies and maybe a little less refined than Hardcore Superstar this was another pulsating set that got most people wondering why we didn’t know of these guys before. Again, I hope these guys come back soon.
Have to credit the Moorings for yet another bill of stunning value, three bands, and what, over two hours of music from three bands who were clearly enjoying every minute, and all for £3. Fudge Folk, I salute you. Still Burning.
