Sonic Boom Six, The Hijacks & The Shakedown Project – The Tunnels – 21/01/10
Arrived early enough to see my pal but an early start on stage meant I missed a fair bit of the music as we’d a number of things to discuss. Managed to take a couple of pictures, so hopefully that will make up for lack of words on the supports on the night. I did find though, that The Hijacks were far more punk than ska, at one point we watched a trumpet getting the full works but couldn’t hear it at all due to the rest of the band. Just something to be aware of perhaps. So…

By the time Sonic Boom Six came on stage we’d covered everything that needed our attention and could thankfully concentrate on enjoying the rest of the evening. SB6 have added a lot to their audio armoury since I saw them last, so many gigs ago I can’t even recall where but Laila, Barney and Co are a band that just throw all genre tags right out the window, even within the same song we’re hearing bits of this fused with bits of that (in my humble of course) it makes for a lesson in wondering just how they’re going to sound next.
Writing this a week after it happened has its disadvantages as you possibly forget some of the finer points of a performance but on the other outstretched one, it gives you time to mull over just how talented and energetic this group is, you just can’t help but be drawn into the bubble of rhythm that they create. The oh so sweetly spoken lady announces that people had said last time out there hadn’t been enough `old stuff` so that had to be remedied of course, as well as being asked if we wanted, ska, reggae, hip hop, all with their own SB6 trademark applied to the songs. Occasionally Barney would become the main singer, a change that was totally seamless within the set. I do think, honestly think, that they enjoy playing Aberdeen, they seem to mention it enough anyway. For me it was one of those performances that just seemed to flash past, you’re so into it that time becomes irrelevant and as always, it’s all over so soon. We do get an encore and the band finish to great applause from the decent crowd.
SB6 have been full of energy and sometimes quirky, catchy songs. I’ve gone home having thoroughly enjoyed their set and yes, I’ll definitely be circling the date on the calendar when they’re in Aberdeen again. The set list is at the bottom of the pics. Still Burning.
