Psydoll & Metaltech – February 2014

Psydoll & Metaltech – The Moorings Bar, Aberdeen 07/02/14

So Thursday night saw a Facebook post asking for someone to go and review some electro metal / cyber punk bands. Not being a genre that I would normally listen to I thought, well I’ll take that challenge and go and see what it is all about.

Rocking up to The Moorings, one of Aberdeen’s finest establishments for music and beer, I made it just in time for the first band Metaltech, a Scottish electrometal band, to get on the stage. I ordered my pint of Brewdog and took my place down on the dance floor. Immediately I was impressed by the sheer volume of people who had congregated there and I actually struggled for a bit to find a suitable place that did not involve being dragged into the mosh pit that started pretty much as soon as the band kicked off.

But not only did the sound that came from these guys get my feet a stomping, I was thrown into an outstanding performance that pretty much blew my mind away. Their stage presence was awesome and the tunes just kept on coming. Dressed up like something that can only be described as a modern day electronic KISS in orange, these guys, for want of a better word, rocked… My introduction to Cyper Punk / Electro Metal had me smiling and in a very happy place.

Next up was Psydoll, and to be honest I was really excited by this time thinking well, if that is what I got from the support band, what I am taking from this band. Throwing all caution to the wind, I managed to make my way right down to the front only to be slightly disappointed. While they were entertaining enough and I certainly enjoyed their performance, they just did not have the same stage presence as the previous band. With only two of a trio from Tokyo, they really did give it all. Nekio on lead vocals and playing a portable keyboard, then there was Ucchi on guitar, both certainly lived up to what was promised and delivered an interesting performance of Electro metal. Now I don’t want to put a bad impression out there about this band, and also it would be slightly unfair as Cyper Punk / Electro Metal is something that I had never really listened to before. These guys were good, and certainly knew what they were doing, but the whole experience was not the same. Maybe someone who enjoys that genre of music would disagree with my comments. All in all I am glad that I got my ass off the sofa and headed down to the Moorings, a very pleasant experience that I would repeat again.
