Go West, Hue & Cry and The Christians – Music Hall, Aberdeen – 17/11/13
A chilly Sunday night in Aberdeen with three bands I’ve enjoyed over the years and its looks like I’m not the only one as almost a thousand people are here in this classic venue.
Singer Garry Christian is in sparkling form as he asks the audience midway through The Christians set who has bought their album, and the answer? One single person. I hope that was remedied by the time the merch desk got packed up tonight. I just loved hearing Ideal World again with many people joining in but I was not prepared for the entire audience on their feet at Terrys request for the last song, Harvest For The World. What an atmosphere in the house!
Performing as a duo tonight is Pat and Greg Kane, aka Hue and Cry. I’d have loved a longer set from them but with Looking For Linda and Labour of Love amongst the highlights I wasn’t left disappointed. Greg took his turn on guitar as well as keyboards. Apart from the musicians you could have heard a pin drop when Michael Marra’s Mother Glasgow was hypnotising the audience and a cover of Paulo Nutini’s Last Request was also well received and expertly executed. No filler artists on the bill tonight that’s for sure.
Finally Go West take to the stage and the good times just continued with the Call Me, Tracks of my Tears and We Close Our Eyes. The two acoustic songs with the band all seated together were a nice lull before the storm of the GW finale. For us non followers of birthday boy Peter Cox and Co it was a huge surprise and wow, didn’t the cover of Kings of Leon’s Sex on Fire get an unforgettable singalong from the Aberdeen crowd.
Brilliant night, and I’d do it all again tomorrow.
