As FnS continues to get in touch with its feminine side JustBoy57 manages to have a word with Katie Sutherland, Pearl to us of course, to find out a bit more about this very busy lady and her band Pearl and the Puppets.
How are things Pearl?
Things are great thanks!
Could you paint us a little picture as to where about you are just now, what you are getting up to and what you can see?
Right now I’m in my hotel room in my bed! I was able to sleep in longer today. Hoorah! I can see my tv and the wii from here which is very tempting but I need to get ready for The Great Escape in Brighton which I’m playing at today!
How did the name Pearl and the Puppets come about?
I was known as Pearl for a short while. I then realised that Meatloaf’s daughter was also performing under the name Pearl whilst on tour with him in the UK. So I decided to add ‘and the puppets’ to my name.
Your Puppets are your fabulous band. Did you start gigging as a solo artist and meet them later on in the journey? Or did you form the band straight away?
Yup The Puppets are those who join me on stage. So technically YOU could be a Puppet! I’m still a solo artist but now have a band behind me. I auditioned for the band later on in the journey 🙂
How does a band take the road from Kirkintilloch to the SECC? What actually gave you `the break` to get there?
It was all thanks to Elton John. That gig is still a blur to me! I signed to Elton John’s management company 2 and a half years ago. He’s been a great support since I’ve joined. I have a lot to thank him for!
How do the tracks take shape, vocals and lyrics first then fit the sound to the song or…?
The melody and lyrics usually come at the same time. It all happens so fast sometimes I’m scared I lose the song! Sometimes I hear the sounds along with the melody and lyrics too. I’m no engineer so I struggle to record things quickly on logic etc.
You have just released your debut EP, “…because I do..”, which is fantastic! It must be exciting seeing your own CD out in the shops? I think I even saw an advert for it on The Sun’s website!
Thankyou! It was very surreal when performing at the stores to the CD on shelves!
And even on a Vodafone advert?
Do you think your track would have been featured on the advert had you not been signed to Universal Republic?
Well it featured on the advert last year when I wasn’t signed which was cool!
How important is it to be signed to such a named label? Do you still have control over your finished recordings?
I feel very honored. The label seem to be very happy with the finished outcome myself and the producer have so all is good on that front!
You have accomplished so much in the last year, playing numerous festivals, releasing your debut EP and even supporting Elton John. What have been the pivotal turning points in your career?
There have been great moments in all of them! I think last years whole Summer was in particular. It was a very busy and exciting time!
How was Wickerman Festival?
Last year was the first time I had ever been! I LOVED it. The crowd were so friendly. A pleasure to play for. I happened to get a slot on the main stage which topped it! It was my birthday that day too so thank you Wickerman!
You have just been announced for T in the Park, which for a Scottish artist must incredibly exciting. What are your other plans for the Summer?
The plans are to play many festivals, release a single and finish off the album. Fun times ahead!
And the album must be around the corner soon? Any details on names, release dates and tracklistings?
Yup the album is due in Autumn. I’m afraid the rest is a secret…
I follow you on Twitter and you are constantly travelling here, there and everywhere! Do you miss home when you are away or is it a case of that you are simply too busy to think about it?
I do get very home sick. I have a large family and we are all very close. I miss my family and friends but recently I got a skype account so I’ve been on that CONSTANTLY.
You have played a few times up in Aberdeen. Is it always a good wee place to play? Any highlights?
I was gutted I couldn’t play Aberdeen in the last tour as they are a great crowd to play for. Hopefully I’ll be playing there very soon….it’s a priority since I was unable to play there the last time.
2010 is undoubtedly going to be a massive year for Pearl and the Puppets. Are there any Pearl favourites (bands or artists), that you would like to see bridge out into the mainstream along with yourself?
I have a couple of mates who I’ve met along this journey. Tinashe is one to look out for! He is very talented and I hope he does very well as he deserves it. Unicorn Kid is also a must to look out for. A fellow Scottish artist!
Why do you think Scotland has such a great reputation for producing fresh, exciting new artists like yourself?
Because we drink Irn-Bru.
Where would you like to see yourself in a years time? Are setting goals and targets important?
I’d like to continue writing as much music as possible and play it to as many people as possible! I just want people to get the buzz I get from writing it!
Anything else you would like to add?
I like parma ham.
Who do you want to win the World Cup?
I’ll call my dad and let you know…
Top 5 Desert Island Tracks?
Imogen Heap – Hide And Seek
Citizen Cope – Sideways
The Cranberries – Linger
Rufus Wainwright – Cigarettes And Chocolate Milk
Regina Spektor- Samson
…that was difficult cutting it to 5!
And finally…your favourite flavour of crisps?
This changes a lot….but my drummer has got me into Walkers Worcester Sauce crisps recently.
Well thanks for this Katie, and hopefully we’ll see you back in Aberdeen before the end of the year. JustBoy57
