Hooker Barbie Interview

FnS dance specialist Jo-d-locks gets behind the decks again, this time its to interview DJ Hooker Barbie.

Hooker Barbie

Welcome to FnS Hooker Barbie! Can you introduce yourself and give us readers a bit of background on Hooker Barbie?

Hi, I’m a Hooker and I get paid to play with twelve inches 🙂

Tell us a little bit about your passion for all things musical?

Music is pretty much my life and I feel very lucky to be in the position I am. I was brought up listening to music all the time, whether it was the radio or on the test card (yes, I am that old). My family are all musical and there were many family gatherings and singalongs when I was growing up. I took piano lessons when I was younger and have tought myself to play a few other instruments – in a Les Dawson style! I’m featured on a documentary about djing here:

Tell us about the nights you play in Dundee?

I run Skoolz Out at the Art Bar in Fundee, it’s a teeny tiny basement bar and it feels like home….been doing that for the last 10 years or so. I also play at the Korova Conspiracy and am playing at the opening night of Slack, which is a new night to come to Fundee.

How would you describe the music scene in Dundee?

vibrant and pretty happening, Fundee has fallen back into the spotlight lately band wise because of the View, so it’s getting a lot of attention. Electronic music wise there’s pelnty happening with the Kill Your Timid notion festival at one end of the spectrum and underground clubs like Vektor at the other. Plenty in between as well, something for everyone to be had in Fundee right now.

Where would you recommend as a ‘must go’ venue for gigs?

hmmm now there’s a good question. Have to say I was stunned at the ABC in Glasgow because they have the biggest mirrorball I’ve ever seen….

You’ve also played in Goa India, it must be a good bit different from UK, do you get the same reaction from the crowds?

Yeh absolutely but a great tune is a great tune and people react to that. Playing in Goa was amazing, one venue I played is the home of Goa trance and I was the first house dj to play there…..it’s right on the edge of a cliff so you look out to sea, I was playing at sunset…..awesome…..they have house music on there all the time now!

If you could choose to play anywhere in the world where would it be and why?

In my studio, I need to get my lazy ass out there and write some tunes! The band I’m in, Beaunidol, well, let’s just say we’ve had an album sitting waiting to get mastered for 4 years and we haven’t…. check our MySpace anyway lol   I’ve other projects to be working on too so I’m really needing to get my finger out….

You play outdoor secret parties – can you tell us about them or would you have to do away with us all after?

hehehe well I’m involved with a group of likeminded people who get together and put on the best parties (if I say so myself) always in fabulous locations….estates in the highlands, loch sides and most recently we had a warehouse party and didn’t tell anyone the location till the week before….coming up later in the summer are parties involving castles and boats!

What exciting projects do you have underway just now?

Well I’ve just got a new residency in Elgin at the Big Fat Eclectic night, where performance art meets music; the Hooker Barbie Roadshow is really popular right now, that’s where I play everything except house music, spawned from late nights at home where I would play tunes from my hard drive and challenge anyone to say it was a bad song and I’m playing at the Fallout Festival in August at the Secret Bunker in Fife.

You have just launched a brand new HB website, tell us a little about it?

It’s designed by my fabulous friends at upcloseandpixelated and it’s pretty much the best place to find out what’s happening with me, I’ve got a myspaz page and facebook fan group as well, but when there’s something to say I blog and put up links to mixes and gigs

You host your own radio show, how did you get involved with this and where can we listen?

Purely by accident! My pal JP got a show, I listened in and chatted with the mucky crew and got offered a show. Hooker Barbie’s house party is on at least once a month on muckfm.com. There’s shows on there covering a lot of genres and you can download previous shows if you’ve missed them. It’s like being in a club in the comfort of your own home as you can blether to other listeners in the shoutbox. I’d done radio before and was looking for a home for a new show. Jammy or what?

What one piece of advice you would give budding DJ’s out there?

Practise, practise, practise….I nailed beatmatching by spending 2 days at my decks, in my pants….

What do you think has been the best progression in music in the last 10 years?

ooooh good question but I think I’d say the internet….

Can you recommend some websites for vinyl and music downloads?

Yes, thanks 🙂 Juno is a fair standard but I use stompy.com a lot

Do you have a party trick?

If getting really drunk and falling over counts, then yes.

I am asking each person to give me an interview question for my next victim what would you like to ask?

Why not book Hooker Barbie for a gig sometime?

Do you believe in ghosts?

Yeh, that was a great film.

Your five desert island tracks?

Oh, now you’re asking….
Otis Reading – Dock of the bay, The Beta band – Inner meet me, The Flaming Lips – Yoshimi battles the pink robots, The Specials – Enjoy yourself (it’s later than you think) and probably Morecambe and Wise – Bring me sunshine

And finally, your favourite flavour of crisps?

Salt and vinegar chipsticks that burn the roof of your mouth 🙂

And thats it babe, thanks for doing this and I’m sure we;ll catch up soon 😉   Jo-d-locks
