Locally, I’m a bit out of touch and I don’t think my tastes align with what is generally popular but I like Copy Haho, Project:Venhell (or PVH or whatever they call themselves these days, they don’t seem to be doing much lately) and Deadloss Superstar. Panda are finding their sound after various changes in personnel and instrumentation and definitely have a knack for cover versions, their version of Fleet Foxes ‘White Winter Hymnal’ is amazing. Debutant is pretty good. I caught Cast of the Capital live and they definitely have some good tunes on the go, both they and Copy Haho deserve to see their songs playing to a wider audience rather than some of the indie guitar dreck that seems to be popular….I’ve also listened to The Marionettes on My Space recently and quite enjoyed it, should be seeing them live soon at a gig I plan on attending so I will have a better idea then, same goes for Min Diesel.
There seems to be a big metal and noise-punk element (grind or whatever ‘core’ is applicable, I have no clue!) on the go, which isn’t really my thing, although I did see Ablach one time and quite enjoyed it, but I bought their CD, ‘Aon’ and it gave me a sore head….
Your five desert island tracks?
I find lists like this nigh on impossible, but off the top of my head at this moment in time -
Friend of the Night ~ Mogwai
Some Summers They Drop Like Flies – Dirty Three
Vessel in Vain – Smog
The End of Radio – Shellac
Anemone – Brian Jonestown Massacre
Yer favourite venue `in toon`, oh, and maybe the most over rated venue?
I have always liked Tunnels as a venue, although it has recently been freezing cold and has an unpleasant smell to it. The sound can be a bit variable and definitely depends where you stand for the most part but in terms of getting a decent view it is great. The Moorings I always enjoy but that is only really for Saturday night local band and relatively unknown touring band bills.
Warehouse is a decent size but a nightmare for trying to find a decent spot…the water coming through the roof from the male toilets was a disgrace, has that been fixed along with the sticky carpet exodus? It’s a while since I’ve been. The Lemon Tree is a nice venue but again it’s hit or miss for getting a view and the bar service can be a nightmare when busy. The ticket prices are also a disgrace in general…and why do you have to pay a booking fee at the door?
Biggest gripe about the music scene today?
I don’t really bother griping as it’s just the way of the world, but I suppose the success of the X Factor and Pop Idol-type karaoke bands over what I would class as genuine original talent irks me, but this is what appeals to the masses and the type whose sole music shopping criteria is spotting something on the shelf at Asda that they have heard on the radio and that seems appealing for £9.97….
